Winsor was the number one Guy

THE North Devon (Atlantic) club played host last Sunday for the opening round of the British Classic Scrambles championship. What a good curtain-raiser it turned out to be, the 100-plus entry turned on the style, the Combe Martin venue was in prime condition and, fortunately, the rain that was widely forecast kept away.
For the first British championship race, all eyes were on pre-race favourite Andy Roberton, but at the end of the first lap it was Carl Pope who led the 30-strong pack. Andy Roberton was at the back of the field having tasted terra-firma, the result of a moment of pilot error', but it was only a prelude of what was to come.
Carl Pope led for eight of the nine laps with Guy Winsor tracking him all the way. Further down the field, Andy Roberton was making up lost ground in the only way he knows how - like a human tornado, circulating so rapidly he was taking almost everything in his path. Twenty-first at the end of lap two, he was up to ninth place by lap four and fourth place by lap six. After that, only Paul Evans succumbed to the Roberton spell. Despite Carl Pope's own problems with a misfiring machine which slowed him on the last lap (and lost him the lead to a very impressive ride by Guy Winsor) the gap to second place was too great.
A couple of hours later, the championship contenders had to do it all again, like before, 15 minutes plus one lap of high speed competition over a classic' classic scrambles track. This time Andy Roberton made no mistakes. Second first time around behind Carl Pope, he was in front on lap two and never headed. Carl Pope's bike problems continued and after three laps he disappeared from the leader-board to be replaced by Guy Winsor who was showing no signs of race rustiness. Thereafter it was Roberton, Winsor and Adrian Cox - thrashing his 350 into a well-earned third place despite the apparent handicap.
