Motocross

Following a very frustrating waiting period, the AMCA MX Championship finally got up and running. In an intriguing opening round hosted by the Newport MXC at its Long Lane circuit on Sunday, there were stories of maiden victories, injury comebacks, drama and close racing.

Talking of maiden victories, in MX2 the popular Scott Mathia bagged his first ever AMCA Championship moto win, a feat then also achieved by Brandon Benjamin in the final Long Lane race.

Much to the delight of the crowd and a certain, proud father, Pete Mathia, 26-year-old Scott also claimed a richly deserved maiden overall MX2 win joined on the podium by KTM two-stroke ace Ben Saunders and Brandon Benjamin.

Over in MX1, Lee Payne started the campaign in truly fantastic form, totally demolishing his opposition to bag three  moto wins with reigning champ, Lee Dunham, in second and Clinton Barrs third. The class at Long Lane prove impressively productive for the Barrs clan as Clinton's brother Tye was seventh while cousin Elliot bagged a strong fifth.

MX2 opened proceedings and there was drama in qualifying as top runner Lewis Abbott was forced out after suffering a knee injury. Making brave comebacks after recent injuries, Ryan Morris, Sean Frayne and James Lane all made the cut. Morris' comeback was truly remarkable, more than a month ahead of schedule after breaking his leg, Ryan aboard the Cradley Kawasaki was 12th fastest.

Also worthy a mention in the Qualifying session was young Joseph Del Busso, who posted a time inside the top ten despite his machine grinding to a halt after just two laps when he ‘dropped' a valve.

Lane, Edward Briscoe and Bradley Bird all fell in turn one, so fast starting Paul Neale led the way before being displaced by Ben Saunders. Three laps in and Neale crashed, dropping back to 21st as a four-way battle raged at the front with Saunders being hounded by Mathia, reigning champ Shane Holmes and series debutant Jack Cox, with Adam Wells a lonely fifth.

Lap five and Mathia was the boss, and that's the way it stayed as he blasted to that first ever championship moto win while hard charging Holmes also passed Saunders for second. Cox, Wells and Carl Benjamin, who rounded off the top six, while early leader Neale eventually finished 12th.

Neale again led the charge in moto two as Holmes tasted the dirt, crashing and restarting last.

Four laps in and Mathia buoyed by his race one success had moved to the front of the pack while early challengers Martin Jones dropped to an eventual eighth and Brad Nixon disappeared from proceedings. Upfront, Mathia remained composed to bag another win from Saunders, Neale and Carl Benjamin. After gating in 13th, Cox displayed speed by getting back to earn fifth despite surviving a last lap scare when he collided with Wells.

With the unfortunate Wells forced out, Brandon Benjamin slotted into sixth spot. Ride of the moto – Shane Holmes, who recovered from last back to 16th.

Could Scott Mathia go on to claim a hat-trick? Well while the unlucky Holmes again fell, Mathia ensured that his dream was well and truly possible as he controlled the early exchanges in the final clash with Brandon Benjamin, Neale, Cox, Del-Busso and Aled Bellis charging hard.

By lap two Neale had moved up to second only to be forced backwards following another mistake.

Up front though and despite suffering from a recently dislocated left shoulder, Mathia still bravely hung on to the lead despite being rapidly reeled in by Benjamin and Saunders, who had initially gated eighth.
