Injury blues for Tomac and Lawrence as AMA SX series heads to Detroit

As well as delivering surprise wins for Malcolm Stewart and Max Anstie (who with a combined age of 64 years, one month and 15 days become the oldest combined winners of a single AMA Supercross round), the Tampa Supercross was one of the gnarliest seen in recent years with several riders hitting the deck hard.

Team HRC’s Hunter Lawrence wiped out in his heat race and as a result required surgery on his right shoulder which means he’s likely to miss the remainder of the SX season. The injury was diagnosed as being a raised and partially torn labrum in his right shoulder, along with multiple cracks in his humerus bone. Some media outlets would crack a joke about that not being funny right here but not us – humerus fractures are a serious thing.

“I’m going to get this fixed and come back 100%, to go and battle for the outdoor and SMX title,” Hunter said. “Thank you to all my amazing partners, who continually are the reason all this is possible. We will get this 2025 turned around soon enough. See you at select upcoming races.”

Perhaps a bigger loss to the series for US fans was the announcement that Eli Tomac – who raced on through the night to add championship points to his tally – has a worse leg injury than initially thought. The Star Racing Yamaha rider jammed his left leg into the ground in a rutted turn and thought he’d sprained his ankle and bruised his calf but after further evaluation, it turned out that he’d broken his Fibula.

“Unfortunately, this was more than an ankle sprain and a bruised calf," said Tomac. "After two days of pain not improving, I got additional scans on my leg, and I do have a broken Fibula. This is such a bummer as I’ve never felt better on the motorcycle in Supercross and getting a win at San Diego was great. I don’t have an exact timeframe of recovery at this time but will be working to come back as soon as possible.”

The series continues without both the Lawrence brothers and Tomac this weekend at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, which will be a daytime race. Chase Sexton (Red Bull KTM) carries the 450SX red plate with a five-point advantage over Cooper Webb in the series standings. Detroit will be round two of the 250SX East series with Max Anstie currently leading thanks to his Tampa win. Due to a points deduction for teammate Daxton Bennick, Anstie too sits on a five-point lead with Cameron Mcadoo (Pro Circuit Monster Energy Kawasaki) his closest challenger.
