Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Malcolm Stewart took a surprise come from behind victory – the first of his career – in the 450SX class at Round Five of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship held at Raymond James stadium in Tampa, Florida. The 32-year-old was able to use his mastery of the whoops to good use as he picked his way through the pack to take an emotional victory.
"This has been an emotional rollercoaster to get here," reflected Stewart. "I did my knee in 2023 and from that point I wasn't sure... especially after last year, just not being able to figure it out and I was so down on myself. I felt like I was fighting everything, until my dad sat me down and said 'Look, either quit racing or go out there and make sure you have fun, because that's why we do this in the first place.'
“Fast forward from there to now in 2025, I had a great off-season, and I felt like I was in a position to do this. At my home race, I couldn't hear my motorcycle at times the crowd was so loud! Between my Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team and my also family, it's been a real effort together – this one is special!"
A crash in the whoops while leading, contributed to series leader Chase Sexton (Red Bull KTM) finishing fifth. Eli Tomac (Star Racing Yamaha) sustained a leg injury in practice which affected his results on the night and Ken Roczen (Progressive Suzuki) crashed with lapped riders while running third, derailed a chain and was paid out 21st-place finish.
Cooper Webb (Star Racing Yamaha) was able to thread his way through the carnage to place second with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson a solid third.
In the championship, Sexton now leads on 101 points with Webb second on 96, Anderson third on 84. Roczen’s low score sees him slip to fourth on 83 – three ahead of Tomac with 80. Stewart’s win sees him enter the top six with 77 points.
The series now moves to Detroit, Michigan for a daytime race.
