DOUGIE Lampkin was making off with the prestigious Skefco Trophy, presented to him for winning last Saturday's rejuvenated British Experts Trial, when Graham Harrison collared him and relieved Doug of the award!
The reason for Graham's zeal is that the solid gold pot is actually worth the best part of a lot of dough and it belongs to the Birmingham MCC and is in Mr Harrison's custody. The Birmingham club sportingly allowed Graham Jarvis to run the British Experts Trial last Saturday and Doug's name was the first to be added since 1997 when the Birmingham club last ran the event. Steve Saunders won the trial in 1996 and 1997 but Doug quickly pointed out that his name was inscribed the two years previous, 1994 and 1995.
Doug was disappointed that he wasn't allowed to keep the trophy but joked, Most clubs are happy for me to keep their trophies as my mum keeps them in absolutely mint condition!
