WELL, with the Sheffield Indoor Trial now just a week away (Saturday, January 29), just in case there's a trials fan out there who doesn't know!) we at least know now what British hero Dougie Lampkin will be riding his factory Repsol-Montesa! Doug has, as you will have discovered on page three, officially signed-up with the Beta factory for 2008 but will be seeing his Repsol-Montesa contract out to the day – and that day is December 31 – so he will be looking to go out in a blaze of glory on the 4RT, the model which he has done so much to develop since it was first introduced as such an unknown quantity, and show the Montesa factory just what they will be missing next year!
Sheffield really should be a cracker as, with the 2008 World Indoor just around the corner, all the contenders will be wanting to strike the knock-out psychological blow. And with the way Toni Bou and Adam Raga have been trading metaphorical punches in their home battles, Spanish Indoor and Outdoor championships, during the autumn is a great pointer towards some real action on the night. They have each nailed a Spanish title each, Raga the outdoor with Bou snatching back the Indoor. The new, lightweight frame that Raga has been using on his factory Gas Gas has given Adam renewed confidence – but Bou remains the man to beat!
Albert Cabestany has all the skill in the world, when he decides to use it, while Takahisa Fujinami often plays the roll of the great Indoors entertainer.
Which leaves the British young guns. James Dabill is in there as of right, as the fifth man in the line-up on the Future TRW Mont but Michael Brown, Alexz Wigg and Ross Danby should make for a brilliant opening act as they lock horns for the sixth and final place.
This is your last chance to see the likes of Bou, Raga, Fujigas and Cabestany on the British mainland for at least 12 months and your last chance to see Doug on a Montesa.
See you there!
