Shoulder injury sidelines ASA United GASGAS rider Ivo Monticelli
By Ben Rumbold on 27th Mar 23
ASA United's Italian Stallion starts his season in the worst way possible with a shoulder injury that will see him sidelined indefinitely. The brutal track at Oakhanger claimed its victims in the opening weekend, although it was a standard first-and-second-corner pile-up that dented Ivo Monticelli’s British title hopes after a cracking scrap with Tommy Searle in race one. At the bottom of a five-bike stack, the Italian emerged with a suspected dislocated shoulder that “they couldn’t put back in at the track”.
Further prognosis found that the injury needed a small surgery which would put the ASA United GASGAS rider out for a month, possibly returning at the Foxhill round of the Revo British Championships.
Searle himself had grabbed the holeshot before the red flag caused by Monticelli being stuck on the track. Sadly the GTCI Revo Kawasaki man couldn’t repeat the feat and at the end of the opening lap, deep in traffic, he suffered one of those bruising falls where the rider just stops as he hits the track. He managed to crawl off the circuit but couldn’t rejoin. With bruised and maybe broken ribs, the cancellation of Canada Heights will help his recovery towards the defence of his British title.
Jack Lindsay on the 250cc two-stroke Apico Husqvarna got it all wrong in qualifying over the finish line tabletop and suffered a broken tib and fib. He will have to have a metal rod fitted into his leg, with no timescale yet as to when he could ride again. We wish him well.
A similar injury was picked up a week after the British round by GTCI Revo Kawasaki’s Dylan Walsh. Back over in the USA for the Seattle Supercross, he also needed surgery after a crash in the first qualifying race. Although it will save the team some air miles, it’s a major shame to see him out after reaching the top 10 of the 250cc West Supercross series. We join the team in hoping he’ll be back in action soon.
