George Hemingway Closes in on Trial2 Lead

George Hemingway (Beta) has thrown the Trial2 World Championship wide open with a sensational weekend at the TrialGP of the Netherlands.
The British youngster claimed both race wins on Sunday – including a remarkable clean ride in the second race – to slash the gap to championship leader Arnau Farré (Sherco) and move himself into second in the standings with just one round remaining.
It is now game on.
Farré arrived in Zelhem with a 17-point advantage over Spain’s Alex Canales (Montesa), while Hemingway was a further eight points back. By the end of Sunday, only 18 points separated the leading trio.
Hemingway began the day with victory in the opening race, finishing on seven marks lost and taking the win on a tie-break from Italy’s Francesco Titli (Montesa).
Farré, meanwhile, struggled to fourth on twelve, allowing Hemingway to eat into the championship leader’s advantage.
Then came the performance of the weekend.
Hemingway produced an extraordinary clean second race, keeping his feet up throughout to take maximum points and secure his second victory of the day.
“It’s my first [overall] win of the year and it’s taken a long time,” said Hemingway. “But I’m happy with two race wins today and staying clean in the second so I’m looking forward to the final round.”
Farré finished third in race two on three marks, while Canales bounced back from sixth in the opening race to take second on just two.
The result leaves Farré at the head of the championship, with Canales and Hemingway breathing down his neck. With only the TrialGP of Spain remaining – and two scoring days still to come – the title is very much up for grabs.
For Hemingway, the turnaround has been particularly impressive.
The two-time Trial3 Junior champion had started the weekend 25 points behind Farré but now finds himself just 13 adrift, having taken maximum points from both Sunday races.
Farré had already seized control of the championship after winning in France six days earlier, but Hemingway has responded in emphatic fashion.
There is now just one round between the young Brit and a potential Trial2 world title.
And after Sunday’s performance, it would be brave to bet against him.
